The Grandmother of Juneteenth
At 94 years old, Ms. Opal is on a mission to make June 19 – Juneteenth a National Holiday. Through her walking campaign and online petition, she has already delivered over 1.6MM signatures (and counting with you included) to Congress to demonstrate how the message of commemorating the freedom of the enslaved on a single day has galvanized a movement. On June 19, we are inviting the nation to walk 2.5 miles with her to show their support.
The 2.5 mile walk symbolizes the 2.5 years it took for the enslaved to be told they were free. Texas (Ms. Opal’s birth state) was home of the first Juneteenth celebration, where on that date in 1865, in the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.
Why does Juneteenth matter?
Because WE matter. The legion of Black fighters – both living and deceased – matter. FOX SOUL is committed to highlighting our community, our stories, and our history in the way it was meant to be told – Our Voice. Our Truth. Join us in celebrating this event by signing the petition to make Juneteenth a national holiday, registering to walk, spreading the word – get your friends and family to participate, and watching Ms. Opal’s live stream exclusively on FOX SOUL.
